you have form you asshole: a workshop in making with Miguel Gutierrez

I think of choreography as a framework for building meaning from your personal strangeness. To me, dance is not a language but an affective mode of perception that enfolds, processes, sits alongside or possibly extends beyond language. Even before you work on an idea, you are already a proposal – a body is a proposal! In this workshop we will approach making dances/performances as opportunities for inviting complexity and building associations between seemingly unrelated movements/actions/behaviors. I want to resist the seduction of “legibility” or the supremacy of the “concept.” We will work with improvisation as a strategy for awakening complexity of thought and desire (difference is already in you, in us, and in the room). How do we welcome and shape intricacy? What is the balance between what you demand and what you allow? I approach these questions and interests from a lifetime of fascinations with queerness, political organizing and its discontents, the intra and interpersonal dynamics that govern art making processes, the clarifying and confusing forces of wanting to be seen (ambition/market/relationship to institution/love), and how to think of “abstraction” as a portal to finding other ways of surviving the brutality of the world.
