SUMMARY:Decades of Dance in L.A.: Celebrating 20 Years of Visions and Voices and 10 Years of USC Kaufman
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate 20 years of Visions and Voices and 10 years of the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance with a dazzling triple bill of companies from L.A.’s vibrant dance scene. Also celebrating two decades of exciting work\, CONTRA-TIEMPO Activist Dance Theater and the Versa-Style Street Dance Company have performed in multiple Visions and Voices and Kaufman School events and workshops. JA Collective was founded by members of USC Kaufman’s inaugural class of 2019. \n> Led by founding artistic director Ana María Alvarez since 2005\, CONTRA-TIEMPO is a multilingual activist dance theater company dedicated to transforming the world through dance by building community\, facilitating dialogue\, and moving audiences to imagine what is possible. They will perform an excerpt from joyUS justUS\, a powerful work that highlights joy as the ultimate expression of resistance. \n> Started in 2018 by Jordan Johnson and Aidan Carberry when they were USC Kaufman students\, JA Collective blends hip hop\, theatre\, and contemporary dance into a distinctive style that blurs dance and theatre\, rehearsal and performance\, and reality and dreams. They will perform Castling the Unknown\, inspired by the events of Bobby Fischer vs. Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Chess Championship in Reykjavik\, Iceland. \n> Established by Los Angeles natives and artistic directors Jackie “Miss Funk” Lopez and Leigh “Breeze-Lee” Foaad in 2005\, Versa-Style Street Dance Company seeks to empower underserved and marginalized groups worldwide through the movement and culture of hip hop dance. They will perform an excerpt from Freemind Freestyle\, a high–energy\, improvised work that features such street dance styles as locking\, popping\, hip hop\, and krump.

SUMMARY:nora chipaumire: Dambudzo
DESCRIPTION:In a powerful performance incorporating dance\, sound\, painting\, and sculpture\, nora chipaumire confronts colonial legacies in a transformed REDCAT theater. Drawing inspiration from the Shona word dambudzo\, meaning trouble\, as well as the ideas of Zimbabwean writer Dambudzo Marechera\, this new work considers the revolutionary possibilities of performance. REDCAT becomes home to a shabini—an informal bar set up in private residences where citizens gather to debate politics and plan community action. Amidst a soundscape of barking dogs and live music\, visitors will be immersed in what the four-time Bessie award winner describes as “a name\, a desire\, a lament\, an inspiration\, even a loathing—a poem—that speaks to the 1980s before the fall of communism and the end of apartheid.” Reflecting on the complex struggles of her home country\, Zimbabwe\, chipaumire’s work expands beyond theater into a lived experience of resistance and ritual. Refusing to be confined by category or discipline\, her anti-genre performance is an insurgent act of remembering\, disrupting\, and dreaming forward. \n  \nOn September 26\, there will be a post-show Q&A with nora chipaumire\, moderated by REDCAT Deputy Director and Chief Curator\, Performing Arts\, Katy Dammers. \nPresented in English and Shona. \nPlease note: Dambudzo contains loud sounds and low lighting.  \nDambudzo is an ambulatory piece where the audience is encouraged to move through and around the space. Limited chairs will be available for those who need them. More details about accessibility can be found on our Visit page.   \n  \nDiscounts available for REDCAT members\, students & the CalArts faculty and staff
