SUMMARY:Laurie Sefton Creates at LA Dance Project
DESCRIPTION:Laurie Sefton Creates\nLaurie Sefton\, an award-winning choreographer\, director\, and creative visionary\, is a Los Angeles native and the granddaughter of a Cuban immigrant. After her acclaimed work as Choreographer and Assistant Director for Onward (featuring Isabella Rossellini and Andy Bright)\, Laurie returns to present the world premiere of her latest untitled creation. \nThis new work explores the unmoored state of society\, grappling with the psychological aftershocks of the global pandemic. Connected yet divided\, we strive toward individual paths\, confronting the paradox of singularity amidst the bonds of community and relationships. \nThe evening also features repertory works by Sefton\, including More Please (2014) and the critically acclaimed The Mythology of Self\, which incorporates a live photographer and a visual artist who transform perceptions of the performers in real time. Much of the program is set to original compositions by Erika Poh\, Bryan Curt Kostors\, Sasha Matson\, and Victoria Vasta. \nFor more information\, visit www.laurieseftoncreates.com

SUMMARY:NOStalgia POP by Primera Generacion Dance Collective
DESCRIPTION:With eclectic\, multilingual\, Latinx aesthetics\, Los Angeles and Riverside-based Primera Generación Dance Collective exposes “el desmadre” (the messiness) that is their first-generation Mexican American experience. Rooted in popular Latine music\, movement\, and moments\, their newest evening-length multimedia dance work\, NOStalgia POP\, pays homage and cheeky critique to the recuerdos romanticos that link Latine bodies together. A collage of ‘80s pop en Español\, the “Latin Explosion” of the ‘90s\, and millennial Mexican core weave together with media depictions of gente Latina. Four captivating dancers tell the story of how messy\, fruitful\, joyful\, and painful the development of an ever-growing Latin Pop culture memory has been and the ways in which mainstream media shapes and is (re)shaped by Latine nostalgia.
