SUMMARY:David Roussève/REALITY: Becoming Daddy AF
DESCRIPTION:“Roussève is one of the modern dance world’s great stage personalities.” —The Washington Post \nCelebrated dance-theater artist David Roussève creates his first full-length solo performance in more than 20 years. Becoming Daddy AF is an intimate meditation on life’s purpose\, created and performed by a queer African American acutely aware of the finite time he has left on the planet. \nLike strands of DNA\, it connects elements encoded in his body\, including 600 years of genealogy (from France\, Portugal Germany\, Mali\, Senegal\, Haiti\, and Cuba)\, a roller coaster journey with HIV\, and the shattering loss of a husband of 26 years — while revisiting movement from 35 years of dance-making to explore the meaning of virtuosity for a 65-year old body. Becoming Daddy AF is the portrait of a man defying death\, though he is unable to fully embrace life.

SUMMARY:L.A. DANCE PROJECT: GEMS
DESCRIPTION:Discover a ballet triptych by Benjamin Millepied celebrating the unity of dance\, music\, and visual art. \nCommissioned by Van Cleef & Arpels\, this trilogy of contemporary ballets—Reflections (2013)\, Hearts & Arrows (2014)\, and On the Other Side (2016)—draws inspiration from the symbolic and emotional resonance of precious stones. Each work offers a distinct world where movement\, music\, and design converge to reveal something luminous and intimate. \nPresented together for the first time in the U.S. by the Wallis Center for the Performing Arts and L.A. Dance Project\, the triptych marks the culmination of a creative journey spanning over a decade. \nReflections is a meditation on longing—sensual\, sharp-edged\, and fleeting. Set to David Lang’s haunting score and framed by Barbara Kruger’s bold visual language\, the ballet explores the tension between presence and absence\, desire and memory. \nHearts & Arrows pulses with crystalline energy\, carried by the precise\, layered rhythms of Philip Glass. Liam Gillick’s sculptural design of shifting light and shadow becomes a silent partner to the choreography\, where emotion takes on an architectural clarity. \nOn the Other Side is a deeply human work—intimate\, emotional\, and communal. Set to a suite of piano études by Glass and enveloped by Mark Bradford’s immersive\, painterly set\, the ballet becomes a portrait of togetherness\, tracing the bonds between individuals and the quiet strength of collective experience

SUMMARY:Co- Presents: SHOW11
DESCRIPTION:  \npresents: SHOW11 \na dance performance + party hosted at Pink Box Studio in Downtown Los Angeles \nfeaturing Felicia St. Cyr\, Gary Champi w/ Waeli Wang\, Julia Eichten\, Marlys Yvonne as La Vela Dona\, Margaux Gex & Lael Battiste\, Orlando Agawin\, Phi Voba\, Shauna Davis and music by Calico\n  \nOctober 24th | 8 + 10pm \nPink Box Studios | 966 E Pico Blvd\, Los Angeles\, CA 90021 \nTickets $20-$50\, sliding scale \nInstagram: @co________.seattle \nPoster Design by Ryan Hunt \nLOS ANGELES— Producers Maya Tacon and Emma Lawes (CO-) are excited to announce the eleventh iteration of their performance and party series. “11” will bring together a group of 8 dance artists in a low-stakes shared evening of one-night-only performance. Participating artists will share new works or works-in-progress created exclusively for this event. The evening of immersive performance will transform into a late-night dance party guided by a live DJ\, Calico (Jacob Zimmer). \n  \n“The evening really felt like a community hug\, holding the warmth and joy of the LA dance scene. If their Seattle resumes weren’t proof enough\, CO-’s understanding of immersive came through all of the works on Friday night. Audience members were buzzing from the joy each artist brought into the space\, mutual aid information was out at the merch table for fire relief\, and it was the escape I needed from a difficult start to the year.” – from “Performance/party: Seattle-based collaborative CO- launches Show 9 in Los Angeles” by Celine Kiner\, LA Dance Chronicle \n  \nCO-‘s events are curated to spotlight individual dance performers in the Los Angeles community who may be lesser known due to lack of visibility or institutional association. Through this vibrant\, eclectic programming and the unconventional settings these events are held in\, the lines between audience and performers are blurred. \n  \nThe 8 artists featured represent a wide range of movement styles that thrive in Los Angeles\, newcomers and seasoned veterans alike. A live DJ set by local favorite Calico ties the evening’s performance together and seamlessly transitions the space into a late-night dance party. \n  \n“The collaborative dance outfit CO-\, run by dancers Emma Lawes and Maya Tacon\, are bringing a party element to their performances. At a CO- show\, audiences move around the space and dancers for a 360-degree view with a dance-club feel. After the bows are taken\, the borders between dancer and audience dissolve into a good-time free-for-all.” – from “Immersive experiences and more Seattle art trends to try” by Margo Vansynghel\, The Seattle Times \n  \nPERFORMANCE DATES + TIMES \n> Friday\, October 24th\, 2025; 8PM \n> Friday\, October 24th\, 2025; 10PM \n> party to follow\, 11PM–1AM \nLocation: Pink Box Studios | 966 E Pico Blvd\, Los Angeles\, CA 90021 \nTickets: $0-$50 +\, sliding scale \n*This event is ages 21 and up.* \nAccessibility information: Pink Box is wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:NOW 2025: Week Two - Gabriela Burdsall; Orin Calcagne and Jenson Titus; Divya Victor\, Carolyn Chen\, AMOC*
DESCRIPTION:The 22nd annual New Original Works continues with a program of works by Gabriela Burdsall; Orin Calcagne and Jenson Titus; and Divya Victor\, Carolyn Chen\, AMOC*. \nBUY A FESTIVAL PASS! SEE ALL 9 WORKS FOR $50! \n  \nGabriela Burdsall\nMENEO \nGabriela Burdsall presents the body as a fluid canvas for identity\, resistance\, and celebration in this solo dance performance. The artist takes up el meneo\, a movement rooted in Caribbean social dances\, in conversation with la clave\, the core syncopated rhythm of Cuban music\, in a dynamic interplay between rhythm\, body\, and cultural heritage. MENEO presents dance as a fleeting monument that questions power and its political symbols. As Burdsall’s body meanders and sways\, she moves between trance-like states of ecstasy and introspection. Her raw physical presence becomes a vessel for primal energy\, as the pulse viscerally binds her to history. \n  \nOrin Calcagne and Jenson Titus\nMommy \nMommy is a comedy-horror play about a family plagued by their mother’s mental illness. When Daddy announces that he will be moving his homosexual lover into the family home\, an already unstable Mommy is pushed past her limit and descends into emotional chaos\, dragging the rest of her family down with her.  In this surreal family farce\, the artists utilize their clowning backgrounds to bring humor to painful circumstances. A live foley soundscape and musical score composed and performed by Cleo Henman bring further texture to this absurd melodrama. Mommy ultimately uses comedy to dissect relationship dynamics and traditional norms in an exploration of what makes society sick. \n  \nDivya Victor\, Carolyn Chen\, AMOC*\nThresholds \nIn Thresholds\, composer Carolyn Chen presents a musical adaptation of poems from Divya Victor’s books KITH and CURB\, which explore immigrant experiences of everyday life amidst racist violence in the United States. Reading selections live\, Victor traces an arc of arrival\, assimilation\, and loss as immigrants move through the paperwork of visas and citizenship\, mythic underpinnings of air travel\, diasporic memories of homeland\, and white-supremacist violence against South Asians. The music responds to the expressivity of Victor’s text with notated compositions and improvised materials developed for an ensemble integrating Western and Carnatic music assembled by American Modern Opera Company (AMOC*). \n  \nNOW 2025: Week Two will be presented as one shared program of all three works on Thursday\, Friday\, and Saturday.  \nPlease note: Mommy contains mature content\, loud sounds\, gunshot sounds\, and mentions of suicide and self-harm. \n\n* Discounts available for REDCAT members\, students & the CalArts faculty and staff
