SUMMARY:VULGAR
DESCRIPTION:“VULGAR” is a satirical dance theater performance that invites audiences into the social dancing culture of the 1910s while critiquing the rigid moral and gender norms of the time. “VULGAR” was inspired by an original copy of the 1914 book Modern Dancing by Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Castle\, a seminal text that both instructed readers on proper social dance techniques and served as a moral guide\, imploring proper etiquette as a way to curb one’s vulgar tendencies. The performance blends historical and contemporary movement\, spoken text read from Modern Dancing\, and theatrical staging to invoke a humorous yet thought-provoking commentary on societal expectations\, past and present.

SUMMARY:MAJOR by Ogemdi Ude
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss the Los Angeles premiere of MAJOR\, a dynamic new dance theatre performance exploring the history and carrying on the legacy of majorette dance. \nIn MAJOR\, Brooklyn-based dance\, theatre\, and interdisciplinary artist and educator Ogemdi Ude mashes up majorette movement\, verbatim theatre\, and oral history to examine the dance form’s history and physicality\, and explore how Black culture relocates\, persists\, and transforms over time and places. \n“Exploring majorette practice is such a sweet nostalgic journey\, and deeply humbling\,” says Ude\, who was included in Dance Magazine’s list of “25 to Watch” in 2022. She explains\, “The challenge of this piece lies in reorganizing the body to dance in the ways you were born to\, but have been trained out of. In MAJOR\, audiences follow the intimate journey of returning to a body that you have lost.” \nAccompanied by a digital archive featuring interviews with multigenerational HBCU majorettes\, MAJOR is a dynamic love letter to the folks who taught the team how to be proudly Black and proudly femme. \nChoreographed to a score that integrates Southern rap\, horns\, drumlines\, melodic R&B\, and soul\, the exciting and original performance will be followed by a conversation with Ude and performers.

SUMMARY:Default: Joy
DESCRIPTION:Default: Joy is a dystopian dance-theatre work that asks a deceptively question: If everything collapses\, what is your default setting?  \nDriven by spiraling rhythms and ecstatic motion the work unfolds as a collective search for joy. Grounded footwork\, interlaced bodies\, and shifting ensemble formations generate a shared terrain where vulnerability\, resistance\, and exhilaration coexist. Through it\, joy emerges as an act of defiance. \nSet as a response to what is happening in the world\, Default: Joy aims to confront numbness\, panic\, and exhaustion\, insisting on presence and collective momentum. What remains is a state of liberation forged through intensity\, endurance\, and shared action.
