SUMMARY:World Premiere of Steven Atwater and Thomas Ford's “In Search of an Exit” May 17 & 18\, at Sierra Madre Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary dance artists Steven Atwater and Thomas Ford\, hailed for their innovative integration of sound\, embodiment\, and technology\, present the world premiere of their new thought-provoking evening-length work “In Search of an Exit\,” which addresses otherness and belonging\, in back-to-back performances on Saturday and Sunday\, May 17 and 18\, 2025\, 7:30 pm\, at Sierra Madre Playhouse. Through a compelling blend of movement and sound\, “In Search of an Exit” reflects their shared commitment to dramatizing marginalized experiences and amplifying voices at the periphery. It offers a raw\, immersive exploration of identity and community. \nAtwater and Ford use original sound scores\, technology spanning mediated forms\, and emergent movement vocabularies inspired by historically ostracized bodies and sci-fi folklore to build worlds in which the social\, cultural and political entangle with the aesthetics of their collective histories. They have presented their work at such prestigious venues as the Joyce Theater and the Kennedy Center. \nAtwater’s choreographic work has been presented by Next@Graham (a Martha Graham Dance Company choreography series)\, Capezio A.C.E. Awards\, Peridance APEX Showcase\, and STEPS NYC Performance Lab. He is the founding director of companyONE\, a pre-professional training program whose students have been accepted to BFA/dance programs at Ailey/Fordham\, SUNY Purchase\, Marymount Manhattan College and PACE University\, and summer programs at The Rock School and American Ballet Theatre\, among others. \nFord\, an Assistant Professor of Practice on the faculty of USC Kaufman\, has established a versatile career as a writer\, performer\, educator\, and curator. His choreographic work has appeared at the Joyce Theater\, Symphony Space\, Ailey Citigroup Theater\, and the Kaye Playhouse\, among others. He has taught at some of the dance field’s most prestigious institutions\, including the Joffrey Ballet School (NY)\, Marymount Manhattan College\, and Hunter College/CUNY. \nFor tickets ($12-$35) and information\, please call 626.355.4318 or visit www.sierramadreplayhouse.org. Sierra Madre Playhouse is located at 87 West Sierra Madre Boulevard\, Sierra Madre\, CA 91024.

After rebounding from the tragedy of the Eaton Fire where Little Women Ballet props\, merchandise\, painted signage\, decorations\, and many of the costumes were destroyed\, Little Women Ballet thanks its many supporters for assisting in its rebuilding and is thrilled to be able to bring these special and unique experiences back this spring. \nPioneering more ballets about women and their stories\, Little Women\, is an original ballet\, manifesting the coming of age of sisters Meg\, Jo\, Beth\, and Amy as they navigate an ever-changing world as they learn to embrace their artistic gifts and share them with the world as a source of comfort. Complementary spring beverages and desserts are provided\, and the finale invites guests to join in on Victorian Folk dancing with the cast. Guests are also invited to a meet and greet\, including complementary photos with the cast following each performance. \nLittle Women Ballet pairs heartwarming life lessons with progressive ideas about women’s roles in 19th century America. Be part of the story as Little Women Ballet dancers perform in the historic mansions and beautiful private grounds of this iconic landmark. Heritage Square is the living history and open-air architecture museum which includes eight historic structures located beside the Arroyo Seco Parkway in the Montecito Heights neighborhood in the southern Arroyo Seco area. \nA combination of over 20 dedicated professional ballet dancers ranging in age from 10-75\, donned in 19th century costumes make up the cast. Each of the site-specific performances at Heritage Square feature a new seasonal theme\, music\, décor\, desserts and refreshments\, and different components of the Little Women novel told through vignettes of the Little Women story presented in ballet form. Audiences will venture into this classic tale for an immersive ballet experience. Meet all the characters up close\, go on an immersive walking tour of the Heritage Square Museum\, enjoy spring-themed desserts and refreshments\, and join the cast in Victorian dancing at the end of each performance. \nWhen attendees arrive\, each guest receives a goodie bag with items to be used throughout the experience\, including a colored ribbon — Pink for Meg\, Burgundy for Jo\, Green for Beth\, and Baby Blue for Amy — which match the dresses of each of the sisters and lets the guests know the route and narrator they will follow. Several of the musical compositions used for the production are composed by Daniel Robbins\, combined with classic Victorian pieces. Dr. Robbins is a noteworthy music educator\, composer\, orchestrator\, and classic film music reconstructionist. \nThe spring Little Women Ballet site-specific immersive experience takes place with five performances on Friday\, May 23 at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday\, May 24 for two performances; 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.; and Sunday\, May 25 for two performances; 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $62pp (includes a spring-themed goodie bag with items to be used throughout the performance; complementary spring beverages and desserts\, and a tour of Heritage Square Museum through dance). Heritage Square Museum is located at 3800 Homer Street\, Los Angeles\, CA 90031.

SUMMARY:1-7-25
DESCRIPTION:1-7-25 is a one act dance performance sharing truths from countless\, unwanted stories that began on January 7\, 2025. Stories of unimaginable devastation and heartbreak. Sprinkled within these stories of loss\, moments of hope and compassion helped to sustain those of us mired in the throes of grief. All of these stories deserve a voice\, and sharing them helps to connect us as a community\, helps to heal our wounded souls\, brings awareness to our struggles\,and invites others to share their stories. 1-7-25 shares aspects of these stories through the beauty of dance. My hope is that this performance will be one of catharsis and healing that is still so needed for our community.

SUMMARY:Ode to La Pachuca
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Colibríes Collective \nA young Chicana is sent to her grandmother’s attic to retrieve a pair of shoes tucked away in an old suitcase. Upon opening the suitcase\, she appears seemingly unimpressed by the random contents it guards. As she digs through the suitcase\, she begins to understand the significance of her abuelita’s belongings and discovers her family’s revolutionary history. \nAbout Colibríes Collective: \nColibríes Collective is a home for movement\, memory\, and meaningful storytelling. We are a multifaceted dance company rooted in spirit and the quiet power of the body in motion. \nInspired by the hummingbird—a symbol of resilience\, healing\, joy\, and freedom—we create dances that live between breath and memory. Our work is swift but intentional—hovering just long enough to stir something within you. \nWe craft dances that reflect untold stories and amplify voices too often left unheard. Our work blends grounded technique with a touch of magical realism\, honoring the many identities and lineages within our company. It is this rich diversity that shapes our collective voice. \nEvery movement holds a memory of where we’ve been and opens the door to what’s possible. Each dance is a prayer—an act of remembering and a gentle beginning. \nWe don’t speak for those who came before us. We dance with them—so their stories can be felt\, and their voices remembered.
