SUMMARY:Indigo Dance Company Presents HUSK
DESCRIPTION:HUSK – the final chapter in the HOME universe. \nHusk is a 44-minute evening length work premiering August 23rd (Matinee and evening Performances) at Stomping Ground LA in Los Angeles\, CA presented by Indigo Dance Company.  This work is being choreographed by Dani Burd\, Rik Soto\, and Madi Thomas – in collaboration with our Season 2 company artists.\nThe Pre-show will feature 2 different pieces by guest choreographers Aisha Reddick and Ashley Tomaszewski (THREE POINT PROJECT)\nThere will be a brief stage/set changeover.\nHUSK is the culmination of a three-year journey through grief\, memory\, and transformation.  A homesick heart fractures time and transcends reality in this emotional recollection. An emotional recollection\, where loss fractures time and transcends reality. Sunder. Oblivion. Grace.\nThis final chapter asks… What remains when everything falls away? When you’re at the edge of the earth…what’s left. How do we find peace at the end..with the end. How do we begin again.\nAnd then… light. Not because it was earned or things subsided.. but because grace arrives anyway. Forgiveness without reason\, beauty without logic. It’s presence\, humility\, peace.\nSeven incredible dancers will support answering these questions\, bringing their own stories and truths to this collective work of art.

SUMMARY:Into the Weirdness: A workshop with Miguel Gutierrez
DESCRIPTION:Into the Weirdness  \na workshop with Miguel Gutierrez \nIn this workshop we tap into “uncanny” relationships of self to other\, time\, environment\, and space. We find ways to identify the strangeness that is always present\, but so often repressed. Dance becomes a way to uncover and express desires\, excess feelings\, and the multiplicity we all hold. These exercises reflect approaches I use in my work\, and they also serve as practices to negotiate what it is to be in a room of individuals together. \nAll levels of experience welcome \n\nAugust 25-29\, M-F\, 12pm to 3pm\nStomping Ground LA\n5453 Alhambra Ave\, Los Angeles 90032\n\n$80/week or $25 drop in\nSpots limited. SUMMARY:LAX | Pop-Up Workshop: Flow\, Power &; Partnering Visceral Movement Theory™
DESCRIPTION:Rooted in visceral biomechanics and fusing athletics with post-contemporary dance and partnering\, this one-time four-hour pop-up workshop plays with the rules of physics to unleash strength\, adaptability\, and power in movement. \nOpen to advanced and professional-level dancers of all genres\, participants will dive into athletic phrase work and guided partnering explorations that tap the body’s action potential. By engaging joints\, tendons\, and fascia as dynamic levers within gravity\, dancers will hone proprioception\, harness momentum\, and refine transitions in choreography. \nVisceral Movement Theory™ (VMT) is the signature movement-partnering language of push/FOLD\, developed by Artistic Director Samuel Hobbs. \nPlease wear clothing that covers the shoulders\, hips\, upper arms\, and legs. \nThe workshop is open to all advanced and professional-levels dancers ages 18+.

SUMMARY:Decades of Dance in L.A.: Celebrating 20 Years of Visions and Voices and 10 Years of USC Kaufman
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate 20 years of Visions and Voices and 10 years of the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance with a dazzling triple bill of companies from L.A.’s vibrant dance scene. Also celebrating two decades of exciting work\, CONTRA-TIEMPO Activist Dance Theater and the Versa-Style Street Dance Company have performed in multiple Visions and Voices and Kaufman School events and workshops. JA Collective was founded by members of USC Kaufman’s inaugural class of 2019. \n> Led by founding artistic director Ana María Alvarez since 2005\, CONTRA-TIEMPO is a multilingual activist dance theater company dedicated to transforming the world through dance by building community\, facilitating dialogue\, and moving audiences to imagine what is possible. They will perform an excerpt from joyUS justUS\, a powerful work that highlights joy as the ultimate expression of resistance. \n> Started in 2018 by Jordan Johnson and Aidan Carberry when they were USC Kaufman students\, JA Collective blends hip hop\, theatre\, and contemporary dance into a distinctive style that blurs dance and theatre\, rehearsal and performance\, and reality and dreams. They will perform Castling the Unknown\, inspired by the events of Bobby Fischer vs. Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Chess Championship in Reykjavik\, Iceland. \n> Established by Los Angeles natives and artistic directors Jackie “Miss Funk” Lopez and Leigh “Breeze-Lee” Foaad in 2005\, Versa-Style Street Dance Company seeks to empower underserved and marginalized groups worldwide through the movement and culture of hip hop dance. They will perform an excerpt from Freemind Freestyle\, a high–energy\, improvised work that features such street dance styles as locking\, popping\, hip hop\, and krump.

SUMMARY:nora chipaumire: Dambudzo
DESCRIPTION:In a powerful performance incorporating dance\, sound\, painting\, and sculpture\, nora chipaumire confronts colonial legacies in a transformed REDCAT theater. Drawing inspiration from the Shona word dambudzo\, meaning trouble\, as well as the ideas of Zimbabwean writer Dambudzo Marechera\, this new work considers the revolutionary possibilities of performance. REDCAT becomes home to a shabini—an informal bar set up in private residences where citizens gather to debate politics and plan community action. Amidst a soundscape of barking dogs and live music\, visitors will be immersed in what the four-time Bessie award winner describes as “a name\, a desire\, a lament\, an inspiration\, even a loathing—a poem—that speaks to the 1980s before the fall of communism and the end of apartheid.” Reflecting on the complex struggles of her home country\, Zimbabwe\, chipaumire’s work expands beyond theater into a lived experience of resistance and ritual. Refusing to be confined by category or discipline\, her anti-genre performance is an insurgent act of remembering\, disrupting\, and dreaming forward. \n  \nOn September 26\, there will be a post-show Q&A with nora chipaumire\, moderated by REDCAT Deputy Director and Chief Curator\, Performing Arts\, Katy Dammers. \nPresented in English and Shona. \nPlease note: Dambudzo contains loud sounds and low lighting.  \nDambudzo is an ambulatory piece where the audience is encouraged to move through and around the space. Limited chairs will be available for those who need them. More details about accessibility can be found on our Visit page.   \n  \nDiscounts available for REDCAT members\, students & the CalArts faculty and staff

SUMMARY:Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca: Searching For Goya
DESCRIPTION:“Internationally recognized as one of Spain’s most respected troupes\, this is Flamenco in its pure essence.” —Boston Globe \nInspired by the drawings and paintings of Francisco de Goya\, Noche Flamenca’s new work takes us on a journey through the Spanish artist’s graphic imagination and his response to the political turmoil and injustices of his time. Choreographed by Artistic Director Martín Santangelo and Bessie Award-winning Principal Dancer Soledad Barrio\, Searching for Goya is flamenco at its most transformative. This masterful ensemble of dancers\, singers\, and musicians fuse theatricality with raw emotion\, pushing flamenco’s boundaries in a performance as striking as Goya’s art.
